“Your Will Be Done” Teaching & Practice

The Commons is in a season of discernment. We are trying to figure out what God has next for our little community. Often what communities mean by “discernment” is gathering all the voices together and having a big meeting to hear what everyone thinks and then make a plan that seems safe, reasonable and smart in response. When we use the word “discernment” we are trying to get to a place of Holy Indifference. A place where we can pray like Jesus in the Lord’s Prayer “Your will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.” Sometimes this path leads us to things that seem less safe, less reasonable, and less smart, but in the end they may be more loving, more worthwhile, more adventurous, and more creative then we could have ever planned on our own. We are trying to take this second path of discernment.

The best way to learn discernment is to start to practice it. Even if you are new to The Commons (or just visiting) you are more than welcome to join us on for any part of our journey. Here is a list of what is happening over the next few months at our Gatherings (and other places) to help us lean into Discernment, Prayer and Listening:

  • Sun. Dec 29th – No Gathering
Sabbath Sunday – Take some time to rest.
  • Sun. Jan 5th – 4:30pm – Potluck Supper & Discussion.
    104 Hughson St. N.
We spent all December traveling to other churches, we want to hear what people thought of the experiment. What felt good? What felt missing? What surprised you?
  • Tue. Jan. 7th – 7pm – Visiting the Barnabas Listening Prayer night.
HOPE Centre, 606 Dundas St. E. Waterdown.
Click Here for more info and directions.
  • Sun. Jan 12th – 4:30pm – Worship Gathering: Truth Sunday.
    104 Hughson St. N.
Part of getting to a place of Holy Indifference is to be able to be open and honest with ourselves and each other. We will be giving time to voice what has been hard at The Commons over the last year? We also want to voice what has been good, why are you a part of The Commons?
  • Wed. Jan 15th – 9:30am – Morning Prayer Time.
GOHOP Prayer Room in the basement of 541 Barton St. E.
A simple time of intentionally praying for each other.
  • Sun. Jan. 19th – 4:30pm – Worship Gathering: Contemplative Gospel.
    104 Hughson St. N.
We are going to learn the spiritual practice of Contemplative Gospel Reading. This is a very creative and imaginative way to read the stories of Jesus.
  • Sun. Jan. 26th – 4:30pm – Worship Gathering: Prayer of Indifference.
    104 Hughson St. N.
Part of discernment prayer is seeking to be in a place of holy indifference. We seek to learn a posture where we can pray like Jesus did “God, not my will but your will be done.”

  • Wed. Feb. 26th – 7pm – Ash Wednesday Funeral Songs Open Mic.
Fort Elgin – 55 Elgin St. Hamilton (the little house beside Beasley Park)
    We’re all Gonna Die! (someday)
Ash Wednesday is the day on the Church Calendar were we are invited to reflect on our own morality. Ashes to ashes and dust to dust is a part of life. The Commons invites you to a “Funeral Songs” open mic. We are asking people to come with a song, story or poem that you would want shared at your own funeral. How we want to be remembered in death says a lot about what we value in life. We will also be offering to place an ash cross on the forehead of anyone who would find that meaningful (if that doesn’t fit you, don’t worry you are still welcome to come and participate in the open mic).
  • Sun. Mar 1st. – 4:30pm. Songs & Story Gathering. We had put a hold on Music during our discernment prayer focus. We are going to do a bunch of singing to celebrate the end of our discernment process. Randy will also be sharing some of his story and how God has been showing up in some weird ways over the last 6 months.
  • Tue. Mar. 3rd – 7pm – Visiting the Barnabas Listening Prayer night.
HOPE Centre, 606 Dundas St. E. Waterdown.
Click Here for more info and directions.
  • Sun. Mar. 8th, 6pm-Midnight. Drop in prayer time.
TrueCity 24/7 prayer room at 78 Vine St.
This is an interactive space with lots of different stations. We will be doing this instead of our regular gathering. More info coming soon about what is happening at different times. Drop in for 30 minutes or stay for a couple hours. We will also be having some focused time of music and spiritual practice. We will be posting those times soon.
  • Sun. Mar 15th, 4pm – NEW TIME, LOCATION, and PARTNERSHIP!
    541 Eatery & Exchange – 541 Barton St. E.
At The Commons we have community partnership in our DNA. For the rest of the year we are trying an experiment with a little church plant called The Meeting Place that meets at the 541 Eatery & Exchange. It will be 2 churches with 1 gathering. I know that might sound a little strange but we really feel like this is something God has been leading us into. To be honest “strange & weird” are not bad. It is often when we try out an idea that doesn’t make sense for a “smart marketing” point of view that we leave room for the Holy Spirit to do something creative and beautiful. If you want to join in on the adventure (or just visit) we would love to have you in the mix.
