Paul’s Spiritual Hero: Shawn Michaels

In the summer we were all taking turns talking about our spiritual heroes and sharing their story with the community. Paul Perry talked about the wrestler (one of Paul’s favourite topics in general) Shawn Michaels. Here is Paul’s notes and videos that he shared.

As you can see from the video at the beginning of the night my spiritual hero is Shawn Michaels. There are two people who helped me come to Christ, Keith Baker and my favorite wrestler the Heartbreak Kid Shawn Michaels.

Shawn Michaels was born Michael Shawn Hickenbottom on July 22, 1965 in Chandler, Arizona. At first his mom was not happy because she ordered a second girl but got a third boy. When he was born his mom did not want to see him. The next day the nurses were telling her “there was a baby lonely” down where the keep the babies. His mom asks “why” and the told her that “the baby’s mom did not want to see him.” She asks “who would do such a thing”, and they answered “you”. She asks them to “bring the baby to her”, and they did. She never stop loving him from that day on.

Shawn was born into a military family, so he moved a lot. They finally settle in San Antonio, Texas and that’s where he grew up for most of his childhood. When he was 12 he decided he wanted to become a wrestler after watching some of the greats such as Tully Blanchard & Ric Flair. While attending Randolph High School in Universal City, Texas he played linebacker, for their football team, and later became their captain. At one of the school’s talent shows, Shawn and one of his friends Kenny did a 30-45 minute wrestling match. That won them second place in the competition.

After graduating Shawn went to Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. Shawn soon realized that college life wasn’t the life for him, so he went to his dad and said “I tried college and it is not working for me. I don’t want to waste my time and your money. Please let me try wrestling.” His dad said “ok.”

Shawn was trained by Jose Lothario. After his training with Lothario he made his debut in Mid-South. He lost a lot of his matches there. Same time he debuted in Mid-South he debuted in Texas All-Stars Wrestling. While in TASW he was partnered up with Paul Diamond to form American Breed and they won the promotion’s tag title. After he was done there he went to Central States Wrestling where he meant Marty Jannetty and they won the promotion’s tag title. Shawn left after that and went to World Class Championship Wrestling. Again he lost most of his matches.

Shawn finally got national exposure when he again started to team with Marty Jannetty this time to form the Midnight Rockers in the American Wrestling Association, where they won the promotion’s tag title twice. They left for the WWE for their second stint after getting fired the year before.

In January 1992 Shawn turns on Marty to start a singles career that soared ever since with 3 WWE Championships, 1 World Heavyweight Championship, 1 European Championship, 3 Intercontinental Championships, 5 WWE World Tag Team Championships, 1 WWE Tag Team Championships, Back To Back Royal Rumble Victories, 39 Eliminations (Record), Fourth Triple Crown Champion, First Grand Slam Champion, 2011 WWE Hall Of Famer, 11 Slammy Awards, and 1 WWE World Tag Team Championships not recognized. Shawn also wrestle in numerous of first matches to set the bar in them matches such as the ladder, 60 minute iron man, hell in the cell, and the elimination chamber.

All of that could not of happened because in 1998 Shawn had a career threatening back injury. That was his physical problems, but his mind and spirit was hurting to. He started taking pain killers and later he was addicted to them. Shawn was alienating everyone but I’ll get back to that later.

On March 31, 1999 he married his second wife former WCW Nitro Girl (Whisper) at the Graceland Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas, Nevada. 6 weeks into the marriage they found out Rebecca was pregnant with their first child Cameron. When he heard the news he promised to clean up but didn’t. During this time Shawn made periodically appearances on WWE shows, also Rebecca was praying in her bedroom closet. Yes she was the true definition of a closet prayer. One night Shawn woke up and was looking for some cookies. Rebecca told him he ate them with Cameron and that’s was what did it for him to get off the pain killers.

Shawn become a born again Christian in early 2002 under the influence of his wife. Since he became a Christian he has incorporated it in his work. He wears crosses on his attire and he would get down on his knees and pray on his way to the ring. He is also a bible teacher for Cornerstone Church. When Shawn teaches the bible, he uses the bible to show youth how God wants them to solve their everyday problems.

What has Jesus done for him, he gave Shawn his career back. At the same level he was at when he retired the first time, also a family that supports him. Title shots that he would not of happen when he returned if it wasn’t for his love and grace.

The reasons that Shawn is my spiritual hero are found in numerous verses in the bible which I’ll read to you. The first 1 is the one that was giving to me when I first became a Christian John 8:34-36, while he is constantly doing Matthew 6:1-4 & Luke 6:36-38, and remembering John 3:16 & 1 Corinthians 13:1-13.

John 8:34-36Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.  The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever.  So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

Matthew 6:1-4“Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.  But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.””

Luke 6:36-38 – Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful. “Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”

John 3:16“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

1 Corinthians 13:1-13Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

In closing what the Commons can learn from Shawn Michaels is to teach what the lord says that needs to be taught at the time, to mend fences with old rivals who are now your brothers and sisters in Christ (improvisation), to separate your work life from your home life, to take time with everyone who enters the door of the Commons, to give without asking for recognition (my mom), give 100% to whatever you do for the lord, no matter how far you sink that there is a grace that can pull you out of the pit, and to show God’s love is extravagant.
