Peace Sunday – Nov 11th, 2018

Peace Sunday, is a way to broaden the community conversation of what it means to work for peace. This year Peace Sunday falls on Nov 11th (the same day as Remembrance Day).

At The Commons Gathering (Sun. Nov. 11th at 4:30pm) we will have a moment of silence for people who have sacrificed their lives for peace. As a church that values creative peace and is seeking to learn how to be peacemakers we also want to widen the remembrance to people who have worked and sacrificed for peace. We want to have a moment of silence for:

  • Civil Rights Activists
  • Christian Peacemakers
  • Catholic Workers
  • Peace Activists and more,
  • in addition to people who have served in the Military.

For our learning component this year we will be using the new album by Hip Hop artist Shad. It is called “A Short Story About A War.”

You may want to take a little time over the next couple weeks to give the album a listen. Here is the Spotify Link: https://open.spotify.com/album/3H838yGtnwjCLEz0nOQ4kO

If you want to take this a step further, Shad will be speaking at Eucharist Church about the album on Thur Nov 8 at 7:30pm ($10 at the door). Here is the facebook event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/275707653056708/

If you don’t get a chance to listen to the album or Hip Hop is not your thing, that is totally OK. We will listen to a couple of the songs with the Lyrics printed out on Peace Sunday. Just thought some people might appreciate a head start.

Our Friend & Commoner: Paul Perry

It is with great sadness that we pass along the news that Paul Perry has died. We received the news the morning of Tuesday, July 3rd.

The Funeral is on Friday July 6th, 2018

  • 11am – Visitation
  • Noon – Funeral

The Visitation & Funeral Service will be at the Dodsworth & Brown Funeral Home, Robinson Chapel, 15 West Avenue North. (Corner of King & Wellington across from The Freeway).

The family has asked for memorial donations to be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or Living Rock Ministries in lieu of flowers.

Prayers for the family, and for each of us as would be much appreciated as we mourn his loss.

Paul has been a huge part of The Commons from day one. On Sunday July 8th, 2018, at 6pm we will be taking time at our first Outdoor Worship Gathering of the season to tell our “Paul Stories,” and to sing some songs that Paul wrote for The Commons.

Bring an instrument if you want to play along. We will have lots of chord charts of Paul’s songs available.

We have started a Facebook Photo Album to help people remember all the ways Paul spoke into our lives. If you have any photos we should add please feel free to post them or send them to thecommonschurch@gmail.com
