2019 Summer Calendar

We like to switch things up in the summer at The Commons with lots of outdoor gatherings, BBQs, and trips to the beach. To help you keep everything straight here is a list of everything we have going on:

Potluck & Songs & Stories Gathering with Jared Both:
6pm – Sunday June 30th
Outside by Beasley Park (55 Elgin St.)

Bring some food for the potluck supper and listen to song writer Jared Both perform and share some stories that inspired the songs.

Community BBQ & Potluck Supper
6pm – Thursday July 4th – Krista’s House (101 Walnut St. S.)
The host provides the main dish (often meat & veggie burgers or hot dogs), and everyone else brings a side to share (salad, chips, dessert, etc…). Bring a chair if you can.

Outdoor Worship Gatherings in July & August:
6pm Sundays – Beasley Park (Near 55 Elgin St.)
July 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th

August 4th, 11th, and 25th
Our summer gatherings are inter-generational and super low key. Bring a blanket and chair to be comfortable. There is a playground, splash pad, and skate park near by so feel free to come early or stay late to enjoy the park. Each week at our gathering someone is going to talk about a song that has taught them something about following Jesus. It might be an old hymn, a new pop anthem or a lost indie song that never got it’s fair share of plays.

Lake Church:
6pm, Sunday Aug 18th – Details Coming Soon!
Every year we move one of our summer gatherings out of the park and over to the shores of Lake Ontario. Beach location and bike ride route details to be announced soon. Sign up with Matt: thompsmr [at] gmail [dot] com

Community BBQ & Potluck Suppers:
6pm – Wednesday August 14th – Neudorf’s House (97 Case St.)
6pm – Thursday August 21st – Kellner-Benton’s House (30 Blythe St.)

The host provides the main dish (often meat & veggie burgers or hot dogs), and everyone else brings a side to share (salad, chips, dessert, etc…). Bring a chair if you can.

Beach Day:
Sun. Sept 1st at Fifty Point
10am Car Pool – 55 Elgin St.
Every year on the Sunday of the Labour Day weekend we cancel our worship gathering and spend the day at the beach just hanging out as a community. There is no plan and no expectations. If you want to read all day, do it. If you want to swim all day, go for it.
Cost:
$15 Adults ($5 for Kids) Lunch & supper provided.
Please sign up and pay Krista by Aug. 18th to help us arrange the rides and food.

First Fall Gathering: Celebrating all things Mennonite!
4:30pm – Sunday September 8th – Back inside at St. John’s (104 Hughson St. N.)
The Canadian Government has declared Sept 8th-14th “National Mennonite Heritage Week.” Most of us at The Commons didn’t grow up Mennonite but we joined the Mennonite church as adults because we resonated with the Mennonite values of:
“Jesus is the center of our Faith,”
“Community is the center of our Life,”
and “Reconciliation is the center of our Work.”
For our first Sunday back inside we are going to explore what these values mean to Mennonites.

2019 SUMMER CALENDAR V01

December 2018

At The Commons we give our selves permission over December to step our of our regular routine and try to be present in the moment for the Advent Season.

Here is where and when we will be gathering over the next month:

  • Advent Week 1: HOPE
    3pm – Sun. Dec. 2nd
    – For the first week in advent we will be joining with St. John’s Lutheran Church (the folks who own the building we meet in) for a gathering that is all about Hope & Unity. There will be lots of music and singing with snacks happening afterwards. We have discovered that St. John’s has some amazing German Grandmas who love to bake up a storm of delicious cookies and treats.  Location: Upstairs in 104 Hughson St. N.
  • Advent Week 2: PEACE
    4:30pm – Sun. Dec. 9th
    – Stories, Songs and Practical Activities of Peace. If you have an instrument bring it to join in on the Christmas Carol Jamboree.
Location: Downstairs in 104 Hughson St. N. (enter off Wilson St.)
  • Welcome Inn Community Christmas Party.
6pm-8pm Fri Dec 14th – We will be the house band leading Christmas Carols for our friends at this North End community center. Feel free to join us.
    Location: 40 Wood St E
  • Advent Week 3: JOY
4:30pm – Sun. Dec. 16th – Share some joy through Aux Chords & Christmas Cards. If you have a song that brings you joy over the holidays feel free to share it with the group while we take time to write out some Christmas cards together. If you have an instrument bring it to join in on the Christmas Carol Jamboree.
Location: Downstairs in 104 Hughson St. N. (enter off Wilson St.)
  • Advent Week 4: LOVE
4:30pm – Sun. Dec. 23rd – Part of showing love is giving space for the hard feelings and hard times. Christmas isn’t all about candy canes and presents, and not all of us have great associations with the holidays. This week we will be giving room for people’s lament and grief around the holidays.
Location: Downstairs in 104 Hughson St. N. (enter off Wilson St.)
  • Christmas Eve Candle Light Gathering at Hooper Law
    5pm – Mon Dec 24th – An inter-generational gathering of music & stories.
    Location:
In the beautiful Hooper Law Building (our old meeting space), 128 Hughson St N (across from the Spice Factory)
  • Potluck Supper
4:30pm – Sun Dec 30th – Everyone is welcome (even if church isn’t your thing). This  is just a community meal for everyone to get together before the new year to share some food, catch up with old friends, make some new friends, and maybe play a little foosball or chess.
Location: Downstairs in 104 Hughson St. N. (enter off Wilson St.)
